Grandpa Tells Stories from Back in the Day

My grandpa always tried to tell me stories from back in the day, when he was a kid. I never really wanted to listen but every time he would start, I would somehow end up there on the floor at his feet, listening to every word, waiting for the next part. They were cane switch raised, going out and picking their own switch every time they got in trouble. One time when he got in trouble, his mom told him to go pick a branch, and being the smarty he always was, he went and cut a branch about 2 inches thick and took it to her. Much to his surprise, she actually used it.

The house they lived in had a dirt floor because they had hardly any money, and just barely got by. When my grandpa and his brother were sent off to war, they were in the air force flying F-15’s for the same platoon. One day they got sent on a mission into enemy territory, dropping bombs on an enemy camp that was close to American territory. Heavy fire was open on both of them almost instantly as they came into range of the area they were dropping their load on. They fought long and hard, but my uncle was taken out. Grandpa always said he doesn’t know how they missed him, but he was being watched over that morning in Nam. The mission was a success and my grandfather was given a medal of honor for his bravery and given an honorable discharge.
