“Back in the day” during the 1950’s cars were a luxury. But for some who prospered and surrounded their kids on farms, other means of transportation were common. As a kid my grandfather and his brother was involved in 4-H heavily. They were raised on a farm and didn’t always use a vehicle. My grandfather’s way to town was a horse. For most people now a days, riding a horse is a joy ride and often used for fun, although work is another factor included in riding a horse. My grandfather loved his horse, Lucky. It was often his best friend and way of transportation. They were very important agriculturally. Work was the main priority. My grandfather would ride his horse to go to town for errands, do things around the farm, and to create a companionship to him. Equine riding is fun now, but was a chore “Back in the day.”
